Opera singer Montserrat Caballe died in a hospital in Barcelona, reports El Mundo, citing a source in medical circles. She was 85 years old.
In September, Spanish media, referring to the diva’s entourage, reported that Caballe was being treated at a clinic in Barcelona. According to sources, the singer was hospitalized due to problems with the bladder. Later, Kaballe's condition improved.
Caballe is known for virtuoso bel canto singing technique and performing roles in classical Italian operas by Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti. International fame came to the singer in 1965, when she replaced the sick American opera star Marilyn Horne in the part of Lucrezia Borgia in the eponymous opera by Gaetano Donizetti.
In 2012, the singer, despite her age, a microstroke and knee injury caused by the fall, performed in several theaters around the world.
