The oldest known photographs of Tehran and Iran were taken in the 1850s by Italian photographer Luigi Pesce (1818–1891)."Photographic Album of Persia" (Album fotografico della Persia)contains 42 prints. In 1860, he was received as a gift by the British Consul in Tehran, Major General Sir Henry Creswicke Rawlinson (1810-1895). Recently, this rare album acquired Getty Research Institute.
